How Positive Thinking Helps When You Catch a Cold
It will probably not surprise you when I say that my motivation in asking this question comes from the fact that I have caught a cold. I have managed to avoid all those bugs which circulate so easily for at least the last two years, so I don't suppose that I should grumble. What I will say is that the symptoms I am experiencing in the present moment feel as if all of those sore throats and snivels which I managed to miss have all decided to come forth at once!
I happen to have one of those personalities which adapts easily to circumstances; if something good happens I enjoy it and if something bad happens I just get on with it. A kind of what will be, will be attitude with a twist; the twist is that if there is a way to think more positively about whatever is going on then that is the attitude I will choose to take.
It is because of this positive attitude of mine that I was so surprised when I managed to catch this cold. Usually everyone around me can succumb and I will remain in good shape; I really do not expect to catch colds. But when I do catch something, boy, I catch it! I never cease to be surprised by individual peoples reactions to colds. So many people automatically assume that it is the flu that you or they have got; rarely does anyone refer to the common cold. What is this? Surely you donot prefer to have a simple cold as opposed to the flu? I know that is what I prefer. Would not it feel better to have a more positive attitude?
I have only spoken with a couple of people today about this cold of mine. One asked if I needed to cancel my flight which I am travelling on later today. What? Because I have a cold? They sounded as if they thought I should be hospitalized, or at the very least I should remain in bed for the best part of a week. I can only imagine the negative thinking scenarios which were running through their mind. All I am thinking about is how to try and be mosre comfortable on the plane and how to protect my seating companions from my germs.
Another person warned me that my ears will hurt, particularly when the plane is coming in to land. Now you may say that if you are warned about something you can take steps to deal with it. I say thanks a bunch for putting this negative expectation into my mind! Let face it, I cannot change the way in which a plane flies or how the human body responds on an airplane. If my ears get sore, it woll not kill me, and the pain will not last for long. Although a positive attitude is unlikely to change this natural physical reaction, it may allow me to notice the pain less. And I will definitely avoid putting myself through twelve hours of anticipatory anxiety beforehand.
What you expect to happen tends to happen. Whatever you imagine you create. This is how your mind works. So if you get a cold, it is far more helpful to think of it as a common cold, and not jump to the conclusion that you are suffering from the flu or any other types of more uncomfortable ailments. If I was to allow myself to go down the negative thinking route, I might by now be lying in bed, focusing on how dreadful I feel and suffering from panic attacks about my flight later today.
Instead of this I have armed myself with a splendid array of medicinal supplements, a box of tissues which are super soft and covered in balsam, a mask, a good book, my iPod and headphones with a lot of hypnotic mp3 recordings to help me to relax, release positive endorphins, reduce my perception of pain and to sleep well. Now that does not sound so bad, does it?

Obesity is becoming a global concern. The basic of losing weight is simple; consume less calories than you burn. Consuming more calories than we need leads to overweight. These products still have calories despite being rated as �low.� It is imperative we modify our eating habits controlling what and how much we eat, and not food controlling our lives.
Reportedly, the Mediterranean diet, a combination of lots of vegetables, grains, fruits, olive oil, and wine is one of the most balanced meals to help avoid obesity. Many researches indicate that people following a Mediterranean diet have lower disease risks and less obesity problems.
On the other hand, many research studies have indicated that wine taken in moderation is beneficial for our health. The secret is to drink in moderation. One glass of wine with our meals is fine; just be aware that a glass of wine approximately has 100 calories. You still can follow this diet even if not drinking wine. Ideally, eat at regular intervals, every 3-4 hours. Why? It helps to keep blood sugar levels stable. Skipping meals will not help you lose weight in the long term. Your goal is to keep that unwanted fat away, right? Hence, do not skip breakfast and add a cup of green tea to speed up your metabolism.
One advice, do not follow rigid diets or extreme low carbs. Yes, I know, I know � there are low carb meals and low fat labels almost everywhere! Again, remember that low carbs and low fat DO NOT mean zero calories. Read food labels to know how many calories you are actually consuming. Me, reading labels? Yes, I am not kidding. Trust me, this habit will help you keep the weight off and enjoy a healthier figure, as you will be in control of how much you eat not food controlling you.
Furthermore, most of these quick weight loss diets and products offer only temporary weight loss. They fail in the long term because you lose lean muscle mass and body water. Surprise comes when you resume eating normal, as you tend to gain that weight back, if not add even more. The reason is that those quick diets or extreme low carb diets can slow down your metabolism.
Therefore, the best way to achieve your weight loss goal without starving is to follow a balanced menu checking your calories intake, and exercise at least 3 times a week to lose body fat. Personally, I prefer a high protein and moderate carbs, as our bodies need carbs to function properly. I can proudly say that I lost 80 pounds of unwanted fat and have kept the weight off for 3 years without starving, but eating a combined balanced meal. If I did that, so can you! The bottom line is to keep the weight off, that unwanted fat, which is so hard to get rid of, and not just have the illusion of losing weight when in reality we are losing mostly water with crash diets.
So, you might be asking, then what can I eat? Again, you can eat a balanced meal. We should eat at least 3 servings of fruit and vegetables a day to keep a healthy figure. Remember our ancestors, our mothers, and grandmothers telling us, Finish your vegetables! Well, guess what? They were right! Vegetables are a good source of vitamins, minerals and are low in calories, unlike processed food. I love vegetables, especially tomatoes with fresh basil.
Drinking 8 glasses of water a day will help your metabolism too.

Obesity has become one of the major health problems facing us today. Obesity will result in increased incidence of heart disease, diabetes and osteoarthritis for this population over the course of their lifetimes. Everywhere we look someone is pushing the latest diet that will help us sheds those unwanted pounds. When we watch television or read print media everyone has the most effective weight loss program for us. We have the low-calorie diet, the Miracle Diet, the Pritikin Diet and a host of others to choose from. All making claims they are the one to get you into better shape. No wonder people are confused and baffled.
At any given time 15 to 35 percent of us are trying to lose weight. We try the latest non-fat foods, go to fat farms and get involved in the latest diet program. But for all this effort and the billions of dollars spent by millions of people we are still getting fatter. The number of Americans considered to be fat is up from 25 percent in the eighties to over 33 percent of the population today.
With the New Year fast approaching many of us will resolve to loose weight only to fail in the coming weeks or months. Some will actually experience their weight loss goals but unfortunately fewer will be able to maintain it. Some of the attempts to loose weight will also come with other medical risks. People who experience repeated failure in their weight loss program will eventually loose self esteem and feel guilt.
So are all weight loss programs doomed to fail? Exactly what is going wrong? We need to separate fact from fiction when it comes to diets and weight loss. There are a few things that may help.
YOU MUST UNDERSTAND WHY PEOPLE FAIL AT THEIR DIETS
There are numerous reasons why diets fail. It is easier to understand the lack of success once we understand some of the reasons for failure.
* A diet that works for one person may not work for another. Diets are normally not individualized.
* When you deprive yourself of one thing people tend to binge on another.
* Most diets are not balanced. This has an affect on our mood,energy and concentration.
* A strict diet can lower metabolism.
* Many diet books are based on few facts, much speculation, and downright inaccuracies.
* A diet in itself does not deal with the internal problems of why a person may be fat.
This should give you a better understanding of why diets do not work. Health educators and fitness professionals need to rethink their definition of diet.
YOU MUST REDEFINE THE DIET MENTALITY
Trying to figure out the best meal plan can be very confusing because the so called scientific evidence is often not consistent. Before you jump on the next craze ask yourself a few questions.
Are the goals of this plan realistic? Are your goals realistic? If you are trying to loose 30 pounds for a reunion party next month or trying to loose enough to look good in a bikini when summer starts and it is already April, these plans are not realistic. If you start out with unrealistic plans in the beginning you are doomed to failure.
* Does the plan fit into your lifestyle?
Is your diet nutritionally balanced? Or is it a deprivation diet that you will dump in two weeks?
Is it a diet that you can follow for the rest of your life? If it is not it is probably healthier to carry around an extra 10 or 20 pounds than to loose it and gain it back 15 times.
* Is the diet individualized for you? If it is not you are doomed to failure.
WE NEED TO GET BACK TO BASICS
We know so much more about diet and nutrition than we did two decades ago. This is a field that has taken a quantum leap over a short period of time. The problem that this causes for people is how to interpret all the information that is available to us.
The United States Department of Agriculture USDA and other government agencies have assembled a group of scientists and nutritionists to help us better understand this. Along with the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association they have come out with a set of guidelines. Trying to figure out the best meal plan can be very confusing because the so called scientific evidence is often not consistent. Before you jump on the next craze ask yourself a few questions.
Are the goals of this plan realistic? Are your goals realistic? If you are trying to loose 30 pounds for a reunion party next month or trying to loose enough to look good in a bikini when summer starts and it is already April, these plans are not realistic. If you start out with unrealistic plans in the beginning you are doomed to failure.
* Does the plan fit into your lifestyle?
Is your diet nutritionally balanced? Or is it a deprivation diet that you will dump in two weeks?
Is it a diet that you can follow for the rest of your life? If it is not it is probably healthier to carry around an extra 10 or 20 pounds than to loose it and gain it back 15 times.
* Is the diet individualized for you? If it is not you are doomed to failure.
WE NEED TO GET BACK TO BASICS
We know so much more about diet and nutrition than we did two decades ago. This is a field that has taken a quantum leap over a short period of time. The problem that this causes for people is how to interpret all the information that is available to us.
The United States Department of Agriculture USDA and other government agencies have assembled a group of scientists and nutritionists to help us better understand this. Along with the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association they have come out with a set of guidelines. The one theme that is consistent throughout is that we need a variety of foods. That does not mean 1 pill out of the green bottle and one out of the red bottle. Emphasis is on diets low in fats, saturated fat and cholesterol and more fruits, vegetables and fish.
If you are serious about loosing weight the first place you need to start is with the types and amounts of food you are eating.
