Growing Lavender: What Does It Take?

Thursday, March 24th, 2011
Gary’s planting machine he built in 1994. Spikes on the wheels make holes; workers sitting on the bench take herbs from the three racks and plant them.
Let’s examine the facts. I travel an average of six weeks a year just to visit growers and distilleries around the world and have been doing this for 25 years. I have watched farms come and go and have watched distilleries dismantled and sold as scrap iron. I have also watched fields replaced with standard crops of grape seed, wheat, corn for bio-fuel, and hemp for rope and building material. The crop just depends on the commodity market for the year. Why are the crops changing so dramatically?
As a born rancher and farmer, I can easily understand. As a businessman, I can also easily understand. Let’s look at some more facts.
When I started my first farm in 1992, wages were $3.25 an hour for farm labor. We were not required to pay overtime or benefits, and the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) never dictated how we operated our business. Diesel fuel was under $1 per gallon, and we could buy a good used 110 hp Massey Ferguson 2705 tractor for $5,000 to $6,000.
In 1992 the price of lavender essential oil from France was $78 a kilo, plus shipping FOB France. Good farmland was $600 to $1,000 per acre.
To grow lavender, you must have a greenhouse to germinate the seed and create starts for spring planting. You also must have a planting machine, or you have to plant by hand. After you plant the starts, you must wait three years before the first harvest. Then how do you harvest?
You can’t harvest with a wheat combine, hay swather, potato digger, or corn harvester, and no equipment is manufactured in the U.S.A. for planting or harvesting lavender. Therefore, I built my own planting machine and have engineered and built two lavender harvesters.

Are You Buying Lavender or Lavandin?

Are You Buying Lavender or Lavandin?

April 7, 2011
The Young Living lavender farm in France
Why then are the farmers switching to lavandin hybrid grosso or super? First of all, the yield is five to six times more per acre than lavender. It can be harvested with a four-row harvester, making the harvesting cost four times less, and the same machinery can be used to plant and harvest.
The big perfume houses do not care about the camphene content in the lavandin, which alters the smell and gives the feel of the oil a bite on the skin. They prefer Lavandin super over Lavandin grosso, because the camphene in super can run from 8 to 15 percent, whereas the camphene in grosso is anywhere from 19 to 30 percent. The percentages depend on soil, nutrients, sunshine, and rain, which can vary substantially
Oil cartels have discovered how to heat lavandin, flash off the camphene, and then add synthetic linalols and lavandulol to make it smell like lavender. These are the fragrance molecules that create the aroma that is recognized as lavender.
Now that you have a little understanding of business costs, ask yourself, if you were a farmer, would you grow lavender? This helps to explain why you do not see lavender farms being developed around the world, except in China where wages are $2 to $5 per day. If you farm in China, the Chinese government will give you the land free. Tractors are one-third the price, and so is fuel. Farms growing cloned lavender are being developed in northwestern China, the very area that was heavily contaminated from the Chernobyl atomic energy plant explosion a few years ago. This lavender is not even pure Lavandula angustifolia.
I leased my first lavender farm in 1991 in Provence, France, the lavender capital of the world, and then bought our present farm in 2000 in the Simiane Valley. Over the years I have watched a steady negative evolution of the lavender industry.

Young Living Essential Oils (Part 1)

April 19, 2011

What blessings our beloved companion animals bring to our lives! Yet as we rejoice in the bond between us, we also recognize a deep responsibility for their welfare. One of the simplest, most powerful methods of enjoying our relationships with our pets is to keep them healthy, happy, and calm. Not every animal will be quietly calm; some will be bounding across the rooms. However, if your pet’s nervous system is balanced, he or she will be free of inner conflict and able to enjoy your shared bond.

Heart Talk is the unspoken sharing of love with our best friends in an array of furs, feathers, scales, and more; it’s a way of achieving even greater bonds with those we have rescued, adopted, or bought. Young Living’s Peace & Calming® essential oil blend can helps us achieve this wonderful sharing of emotions and assist our dogs, cats, horses, and more to feel at peace.

Keep in mind two important factors when using essential oils with animals:

1. Humans have about 5 million olfactory epithelial cells; cats have nearly 100 million and dogs can have up to 220 million of these smell sensors!

2. Because of their incredible sense of smell, the effect of essential oils on our companions is more powerful than it is on us. We only need to run a Young Living TheraPro™ Diffuser for 5 minutes on low and off for 20 minutes to assist our pets. For topical applications, dilute the oil according to species, weight, and age. For example, a horse does not need a diluted application, but a cat would need a 75 percent dilution, or more, depending on age and weight.

For an animal’s first introduction to essential oils, simply take one drop of Peace & Calming in your hands, rub them together, and then pet your friend as you normally would (keeping away from eyes and inner ears). This is the first step to helping your companion move toward a very healthy and peaceful feeling. You will notice how peaceful you feel, too!

Consider using Young Living essential oils in your car when traveling with your pet. Keep a Travel Fan Diffuser or an unbleached coffee filter in the vent for just these purposes. Three or four drops of Peace & Calming will be all you need. This is a perfect approach for going to the veterinarian’s office!

Watch for Part 2 of this blog post later in the month where we will focus on the ABCs of Heart Talk!

Wishing worlds of success to you and your companion,

April’s Recipe: Raspberry Mint Compote

By Key Lime Mousse,

April 15, 2011

Spring has arrived with fresh air and inspiration to get outdoors and exercise. With warmer weather, eating healthier also comes naturally. Springtime colors invoke two of my favorite flavors: lime and peppermint. I feel refreshed and energized with this dessert that offers tangy, sweet, and minty spoonfuls. The mousse base—avocado—may surprise you. Not only is this rich fruit the main ingredient for guacamole, but avocado can also be embraced for its creamy texture in sweet recipes. The compote is a mixture of spring fruits infused with Young Living’s peppermint essential oil.

When I incorporate peppermint essential oil as an ingredient in a recipe, infused into water, or dropped directly onto my tongue at the end of a meal, I discover that it curbs my appetite immediately. As a child, my mother would encourage me to brush my teeth before reaching for a second helping in order to keep me from over indulging. However, a toothbrush is not always convenient. A drop of peppermint oil is a simpler way to maintain reasonable portions. Incorporate peppermint oil into your dietary regimen and enjoy living fresh this spring!

Until next post: Lemon Papaya Strawberry Boats, Nutmeg Macadamia Cheese

Happy Eating!

Amazing NingXia Wolfberry

Called "Goji" by Native Chinese, Wolfberries Have Been Used in Traditional Folk Medicine for Over 5,000 Years The wolfberry legends found in ancient Chinese medicine reach back over 5,000 years.
Ancient Chinese medical texts extolled wolfberries for strengthening the eyes, liver, and kidneys as well as fortifying the "qi" (chi) or life force. An early medical work, Shen Nung Ben Tsao (475-221 B.C.), noted wolfberry benefits ranging from replenishing vital essences to strengthening and restoring major organs. The physician's handbook, Ben Cao Gang Mu, written during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 A.D.) reported, "taking in Chinese wolfberry regularly may regulate the flow of vital energy and strengthen the physique, which can lead to longevity."

The yearly two-week festival in Ningxia celebrates the wolfberry and its amazing health benefits.

Wolfberries Are a Chinese National Treasure
The good health and vitality of the Ningxia elderly has long been attributed to wolfberries. To the people of the province, a bowl of fresh wolfberries a day is part of life. Its health benefits have been extolled for generations. In fact even today, the Ningxia wolfberry is considered a national treasure.

In ancient times, the Chinese people were said to have three cherished tonics for health. They were ginseng, ling tzi, and wolfberries.
According to ancient Chinese texts, wolfberries:
Nourish the yin
Support the blood
Help support the kidneys and liver
Strengthen the eyes
Fortify the muscles and bones
Enhance the "chi" or life force

D. Gary Young Re-Discovers Ancient Longevity Secret

D. Gary Young has made it his life's mission to search the world for the secrets of long life, health, energy, and vitality. In 1993, Gary Young was introduced by Cyrus McKell, a professor of Botany at Weber State University, to a Chinese scientist who was visiting the United States.

This Chinese scientist, Dr. Songqiao Chao, told Gary about a simple, delicious-tasting berry with amazing health benefits. He said that Chinese wolfberries had been used for thousands of years in China to treat a wide variety of ailments. What's more, Dr. Chao related that the people who consumed them on a regular basis lived remarkably healthy lives for 100-plus years. This information led Gary on an inspiring odyssey to the Ningxia region of China located on the Inner Mongolian plateau. In Ningxia, Gary investigated the tiny red fruit known as the Ningxia wolfberry. He agreed that this small berry was the remarkable source of the vibrant health and long lives of the Chinese people of the region.

Gary Young First to Import Wolfberries into US in Commercial Quantities
Gary Young - through Young Living Essential Oils - was the first to import Ningxia wolfberries into the United States on a commercial basis. Dr. Chao's daughter, Sue Chao, assisted Gary Young in bringing the Ningxia wolfberry to the United States. In 1996, when Gary Young first attempted to import large quantities of the Ningxia wolfberry powder, it was quarantined by U.S. Customs as an unknown "peculiar" substance. Customs agents said that it had never before been imported to the U. S. in commercial quantities.

The Goji Girl statue was erected to salute the young women who help harvest the wolfberries.

The Hometown of the Wolfberry
The Xinhaua News Agency reported that the Ningxia variety of Lycium barbarum "is far superior to ordinary Chinese wolfberry in both tonic effects and economic results." Due to their superior quality, some of the medical studies done on wolfberry have specified the use of the Ningxia wolfberries. As with other plants, the Chinese wolfberry has a number of species or varieties. Of the 80 different species of wolfberries worldwide, the Lycium barbarum from Ningxia has by far the highest levels of immune-stimulating polysaccharides.

Ningxia's Perfect Geography for Wolfberries
The Huang He (Yellow) River originates in the Himalayan Mountains and flows through the Ningxia Province. This river creates a unique, mineral-rich, super fertile silt-water flood plain found nowhere else on earth, producing incomparable wolfberries. The beautiful Ningxia region is called "China's herbal medicine valley" and is renowned for meeting all of the stringent rules to be awarded the prestigious "Green Certificate", the equivalent of the USDA's Organic Certification.

Ningxia Wolfberries Win Prestigious Awards

The Ningxia Wolfberry Group takes great pride in the nine national and international gold prizes won by its famous wolfberry. The Ningxia wolfberry has won three gold prizes in the China Agricultural Fair and a gold prize in the Malaysia International Food Fair.

Lavender Essential Oil and Burns

March 23, 2011 in Alternative Therapies, Application, Aromatherapy, Common Questions, Disinfectant, Education, Family Health, First Aid tips, How do I use, Lavender, Natural, Natural Health, Quality / Pure, Therapeutic-grade Essential Oil, Using Essential Oils,

Young Living Essential Oils by Evelyn Vincent

All burns can be serious, therefore seek medical attention if necessary. If the burn is large or severe the victim may go into shock. Inhaling therapeutic essential oils may help reduce shock.?? Therapeutic essential oils can also help cleanse and help the to wound heal. Today, lavender is one of the few essential oils to still be listed in the British Pharmacopoeia.

René-Maurice Gattefossé, PhD, a French cosmetic chemist, is widely regarded as the father of aromatherapy. He and a group of scientists began studying essential oils in 1907.

In his 1937 book, Aromatherapy, Dr. Gattefossé told the real story of his now-famous use of lavender (Lavendula angustifolia) essential oil to heal a serious burn. The tale has assumed mythic proportions in essential oil literature. His own words about this accident are even more powerful than what has been told over the years.

Dr. Gattefossé was literally aflame — covered in burning substances — following a laboratory explosion in July, 1910. After he extinguished the flames by rolling on a grassy lawn, he wrote that…

“both my hands were covered with rapidly developing gas gangrene.”

He further reported… “just one rinse with lavender essence [oil] stopped the gasification of the tissue. This treatment was followed by profuse sweating and healing which began the next day.”

Lavender’s Medicinal Properties

Antiseptic, anti-fungal, analgesic, antitumoral, anticonvulsant, vasodilating, relaxant, anti-inflammatory, reduces blood fat/cholesterol, combats excess sebum on skin.
1.First -Degree Burns (Sunburn and minor Burns):?Essential Oils – Lavender*, Helichrysum*, Rose*, Melaluca ericfolia*. Blends: Gentle Baby*, Melrose*. (Topical: neat or dilute 50/50 with V-6 Massage Oil). Spray with LavaDerm Cooling Mist immediately and as necessary to cool the area.? Use Lavender-Rosewood Soap only after the burn has started to heal 24-48 hours.
 2. Second-Degree Burns (Blisters): ?Spray immediately with LavaDerm Cooling Mist* 4-5 times every hour and follow with 2-3 drops of Lavender* essential oil. On days 2-5, mist every hour and follow with 2-4 drops of Lavender essential oil. Continue using LavaDerm 3-6 times a day until healed. Apply Rose Ointment** to keep tissue soft.
3.Third-Degree Burns : Seek immediate medical attention. Spraying LavaDerm* on the burn every few minutes for the first 24 hours will help tissue rehydrate. Applying Lavender* essential oil after misting will help the healing process.

Essential Oils Used for Treating Different Kinds of Burns
 •Lavender* (#3575)
 •Helichrysum* (#3563)
 •Rose* (#3623)
 •Melaluca ericfolia* (#3501)
 •Gentle Baby* (#3345)
 •Melrose* (#3378)

Products Used in Conjunction with Essential Oils for Treating Burns
 •LavaDerm Cooling Mist (#3249)
 •Lavender-Rosewood bar Soap (#3673)
 •Rose Ointment** (#3709)

Tip: ** Do not use ointments on burns until they are at least three days old, or if the burn is bad ask your doctor when it would be advisable to use ointments.

Special Note: * 98 percent of all essential oils in the world are not therapeutic; meaning that they can cause a burn or other injury to become worse. Additionally, cheaper Lavender oils often are derived from “Lavandin” which has a much higher camphor level which will make a burn many times worse! Therefore, we never recommend using any essential oil that does not come from a reputable distiller, such as Young Living. I know there are cheaper Lavender oils on the market but stories abound when those are used in First Aid situations and have actually made the wound much worse.

Wolfberry:™ The Perfect Antioxidant Food Source

You are about to read of a nutritional food with amazing medical properties. Truly one of nature’s miracles, the Ningxia Wolfberry™, known for thousands of years as a Chinese National Treasure, is the perfect food source for antioxidants. Wolfberries aid in the battle to neutralize the destructive compounds in your body, called free radicals.

Free radical production is actually a normal part of life, and usually, the body's natural defense systems neutralize free radicals that develop, rendering them harmless. However, environmental assaults on your body, such as UV-radiation, pollutants and alcohol, overpower your body's ability to neutralize free radicals, allowing them to cause damage to the structure and function of the body's cells. There is good evidence that free radical damage contributes to aging and leads to a host of illnesses, including degeneration of the brain and eyes, cancer and heart disease. Consuming a healthy diet, rich in antioxidants, helps provide the necessary tools to improve energy and vitality and neutralize harmful free radicals.

Simply stated, “NingXia” is an Anti-aging fruit drink.
Scientist and physicians are realizing as never before that what we need is a massive nutrient infusion. The lack of nutrients is robbing millions of the health and energy necessary to enjoy life. NOT ALL WOLFBERRIES ARE CREATED EQUAL
It’s true, not all wolfberries are the same. The 3 most potent berries in

the Wolfberry family are Chinese Xinjiang wolfberries, Tibetan Goji berries,

and Ningxia wolfberries.

These wolfberries have been used in traditional Chinese
culture for over 5,000 years!
Wolfberries have been renowned for their wide range of health benefits by

Ancient Chinese medical texts. The people who consumed the wolfberry fruit

lived free of common diseases like arthritis, cancer and diabetes, as well

as increasing their average life expectancy to over 100 years!

Wolfberries have been rated the food with the highest antioxidant ability,

registering in at an amazing 3,472 ORAC units per fluid ounce. As a

reference point of some of the other highest forms of ORAC are Vitamin E oil

at 3,309, Pomegranate fruit at 3,037, blueberries 2,400 and raspberries

1,220.

Laboratory test rate the antioxidant levels of fruits and vegetables.

Wolfberry is rated very high compared to other known sources of antioxidant

food in the world.

Scientists have discovered that NingXia Wolfberries are a Powerful Immune-

Supporting Agent, agents, as verified by modern scientists. Ningxia

wolfberries have been found to have extremely high levels of immune-

stimulating polysaccharides. Ningxia wolfberries are also an astonishing 16

PROVEN, not pretending. NingXia Red® not only claims to be one of a kind, it

has the numbers and the research to prove it. After all, your health is too

important to trust with products only pretending to be something

extraordinary.

S-ORAC measures a product’s ability to destroy the most dangerous amongst

Spring Cleaning Belly Twists with Di-Gize

April 5, 2011

Spring is finally here and it’s a good time to ensure your whole being is in resonance with the season! I want to share some tips that will help you clear and clean out the old, heavy energy of the winter and lighten up on all levels—physically, mentally, and emotionally.

According to the principles of yoga, doing poses (or asanas) that twist and turn the body—such as the Belly Twist Version A—massages the inner muscles and organs, essentially wringing out toxins while bringing in a rush of fresh oxygen and nutrients. This flushes impurities from inner tissues and helps organs perform their functions properly. This is an effective method for improving sluggish digestion. Other benefits of this pose include the stretching of back muscles, realignment and lengthening of the spine, and hydration of the spinal disks. The contraindications of this pose are recent or chronic injury to the knees, hips, or back.

Practice combining the Belly Twist with Young Living’s Di-Gize™ essential oil blend to enhance your body’s ability to digest properly and eliminate waste. This blend of tarragon, ginger, peppermint, juniper, fennel, lemongrass, anise, and patchouli helps support a healthy digestive system.

Preparation:

1. Lie on your back with your knees bent. This will take pressure off your lower back and soften your abdominal muscles.

2. Apply two drops of Di-Gize diluted with a small amount of V-6™ Enhanced Vegetable Oil Complex to your abdomen. Gently massage your abdomen in a clockwise motion, beginning on the right side of your lower abdomen, working up the right side to the rib cage, crossing the abdomen just below the diaphragm, back down the left side of the abdomen, then back across the lower abdomen to where you began. Drop into the sensation of the massage and begin to slow down and deepen your breathing. This clockwise abdominal massage traces the motion of your large intestine’s elimination process and can assist with constipation. Repeat this 7–10 times.

Belly Twist Instructions:

1. Remain lying on your back and bring your arms out to the sides with the palms facing down in a T position. Bend both knees into the chest.

2. Exhale and drop both knees over to the left side of your body, twisting the spine and low back. Slide the knees as close to the left arm as possible. Look at the right fingertips.

3. Keep your shoulders flat to the floor, close your eyes, and relax into the posture. Let gravity pull the knees down, so you do not have to use any effort in this posture.

4. Breathe and hold for 6–10 breaths.

5. To release, inhale and roll the hips back to the floor

6. Repeat on other side.

7. Go back and twist on the side you started at and switch again.

After the Belly Twists, remember to drink several glasses of water to keep your body’s cleansing process in motion.

Spring is a great time of year for planting the seeds for your intentions. When our bodies are properly eliminating, we have more energy for creating and manifesting.

Enjoy!

Young Living Shares Essential Oils at Prestigious Conferences

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

Last month I had the privilege of introducing Young Living Essential Oils to thousands of people in Southern California at both the Women’s Conference and the TEDMED Conference.

My journey started at the 24th annual Women’s Conference, where over 14,000 attendees gathered to be inspired by the likes of Maria Shriver, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michelle Obama, Dr. Jill Biden, the Honorable Sandra Day O’Connor, former Associate Justice the Honorable Ruth Ginsburg, Erin Brockovich, and Pulitzer Prize-winning and National Book Award-winning poet Mary Oliver, among many others. The central theme was “Empowering women to be architects for change,” and the energy of inspiration and possibility was truly palpable.

Also speaking at the Women’s Conference was fashion designer and philanthropist Donna Karan. Donna’s commitment to philanthropy and global healing led her to found the Urban Zen Foundation, an organization that brings together like-minded people and organizations to define solutions and implement action in the areas of well-being, empowering children, and preserving culture. Young Living has partnered extensively with Urban Zen for the past two years, working to bring the healing power of essential oils to even more people.

Young Living Essential Oils @ Women's ConferenceI was privileged to be part of Urban Zen’s booth at the Women’s Conference, which was a beautiful space where visitors relaxed while they waited for a complimentary 10–15 minute aromatherapy and Reiki healing session. Our space was a haven from the rest of the busy conference; I watched people visibly become more relaxed and calm as they inhaled the uplifting properties of the essential oils. We diffused Thieves® essential oil blend in an Aria™ diffuser, and the aroma carried into a majority of the enormous marketplace. Other essential oils used in the healing sessions included peppermint, frankincense, lavender, Peace & Calming®, and Valor®; in all we provided more than 120 wellness sessions throughout the entire conference!

After the Women’s Conference ended we drove to San Diego for the TEDMED conference at the Hotel Del Coronado, an annual event where the best in health care and medicine come together to share the latest ideas. Again with Donna Karan and the Urban Zen team, we created a sanctuary for healing and wellness where we offered complimentary wellness sessions using Young Living essential oils. We used a wide variety of essential oils on our visitors, including Thieves, PanAway®, Deep Relief™ Essential Oil Roll-On, Valor, Joy™, frankincense, Gentle Baby™, Grounding™, jasmine, and peppermint.

Both events were great ways to showcase how companies like Urban Zen and Young Living are bridging the gap between Western and Eastern wellness modalities. I’m proud to belong to organizations that strive to honor their stewardship to bring healing to the world.

Blessings,
